The United Workers Party launched their 2021 manifesto Monday night.
The party posted to Facebook saying:
” ‘Es zort pahwayyy?’ With that rallying cry to which scores of enthusiastic UWP supporters replied, “ouiiiiiiii!” Prime Minister, The Honourable Allen Chastanet, launched the United Workers Party’s Comprehensive 60-page manifesto at Spider City in Gros Islet last night.
During the event viewed by thousands online, the Prime Minister said that after keeping the promises of their 2016 manifesto, the UWP is confident in delivering on its new 5 for 5 plan. Before presenting his team with copies of the document, Prime Minister Chastanet said, “Our 5 for 5 plan is designed to make sure that nobody in St Lucia is left behind.”
The five pillars of the plan include introducing unemployment benefits, expanding monthly assistance for the needy, saving parents money on school books, reducing VAT to 10%, and providing medical care for all.
During his inspirational speech, Prime Minister Chastanet reminded Saint Lucians that the UWP propelled the country to become the fastest growing economy in the Caribbean during very trying times. In addition to that, the UWP reduced the unemployment rate and debt to GDP. However, he warned that with uncertainty on the horizon following the COVID-19 pandemic, now is not the time to take a backwards step. “No change is required; let us keep working!”
The night saw a mix of entertainment and fiery presentations from UWP candidates. All 17 candidates were clad in yellow hard hats symbolizing their readiness to work on behalf of the people of Saint Lucia.
The UWP’s Manifesto is available both in hard copy and online
